Here are some ideas:
Before-create art work, read about it, look at pictures available online, go over maps of the area, find materials that go along with the study, prepare for making observations and data collection
During-encourage questions and note taking, bring books, make connections, build on additional interests
After: continue before tasks and discuss findings

Its good to have it all written down, there have been many times when my mind has gone blank when I've needed the ideas the most!
Mine does too! I write everything down.
